This year Ireland was ranked as the 10th most innovative economy in the world by the Global Innovation Index 2018, scoring highly in areas such as tech exports and foreign direct investment (FDI) net flows.

R&D investment

Research and development is extremely important to the government’s plans for economic and productivity growth in Ireland.

Data from the ‘Research and Development Budget 2017-2018’ publication revealed that the Irish government spent €739.3 million in this area in 2017 and that allocated funding for R&D is estimated at €751.7 million in 2018.

Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund

The €500 million Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund was launched in July this year. This fund will contribute to projects until 2027.

Ireland’s Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys, has said:

“We’re living in the technological revolution, and we’re looking for proposals for truly game-changing technologies. The world around us is changing and we can’t afford to stand still. The fund is about ensuring that Ireland can stay ahead of the curve”.

The Government are looking to co-fund projects that will focus on areas such as robotics, AI, augmented and virtual reality, advanced manufacturing, and smart and sustainable food production.

DCU Innovation Centres

Dublin City University (DCU) spent €3.75 million on the expansion of its innovation centres in 2017.

DCU Alpha, one of the innovation centres, has been selected to host a Dublin chapter of Europe’s largest co-working and digital innovation campus “Talent Garden”.

The new hub will offer a flexible workspace for freelancers, tech start-ups, and corporate innovation labs.

uk public sector procurement

As public sector organisations are financed by public money, public sector procurement must be fair and transparent.

To ensure this, there are regulations in place that apply to all public sector contracts over a certain value, or ‘threshold’ – buying organisations must adhere to these rules.

Find out more about UK public sector procurement below.

What does the UK public sector buy?

UK public sector organisations include central government departments, local government, councils, the NHS, the police and other emergency services. With such a variety of organisations performing such diverse roles, the range of goods, works, and services required is endless.

This means that businesses of all sizes have a chance of winning work with the public sector, whether you sell pencils or manage public sector buildings.

The OJEU

The Official Journal of the European Union (otherwise known as OJEU) is an online journal which UK public sector organisations must use to publish public sector procurement opportunities worth over a certain value threshold.

Services like Supply2Gov take contracts published in the OJEU and lower value contracts published on thousands of other sites and gather them so that they are all on one easy to search platform.
