Irish local infrastructure is set for rejuvenation as part of the government’s long-term investment strategy Project Ireland 2040.

The two key pillars of funding are the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.


Rural Regeneration and Development Fund

Launched in July 2018, the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund is a  €1 billion initiative from the Department of Rural and Community Development is aimed at ambitious rural projects and will run until 2027.

Funding will be awarded through a competitive bidding process, based on delivering set objectives as outlined in the National Planning Framework.

The policy is expected to regenerate communities by encouraging entrepreneurship and providing further employment. Residential developments, digital connectivity, and public transport will also benefit. The submission deadline is 27 September 2018.


Urban Regeneration and Development Fund

Consisting of €2 billion through to 2027 and administered by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, the Fund will improve both residential and commercial developments across Ireland’s five cities, while also enhancing local services within communities.

Introducing the policy in July 2018, the Minister for Local Government, Eoghan Murphy TD, and-development-fund/”>said: “This fund is a transformational opportunity for our Irish cities and towns over the next ten years and is about backing better and more coordinated planning for future generations.”

Each bid must be of at least €2 million. The deadline for submissions is 28 September 2018.

Proposals for funds

For both funds, 25% of each proposal must be matched by other public or private sources.

Both funds are open to the two following types of bids:

Category 1: Procurement-ready proposals with the necessary preparation in place, i.e. planning, which can commence in 2019.

Category 2: Proposals that meet the required criteria, with further development needed to fulfil their potential. Such bids will be eligible for additional expert or technical support.
