Public transport is set to be a big part of the Capital Plan, a ten-year plan for investment into infrastructure. In January this year Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said;

“public transport is something I really believe in and something in which we will invest very heavily into the future’’


The government’s planned investment will support expanded bus services, additional carriages for Irish Rail, the metro project and the new Luas lines.

In total, the government is set to spend €2 billion on transport this year and €1.66 billion of this will be spent on land transport.



Education is another key area for the Irish government; In 2018 expenditure sits at €10.1 billion. However, it has recently been announced that the government will increase capital spending on schools over the ten years as part of a €12bn investment programme.

Plans include the construction of new school buildings with work taking place at the end of this year.



The Irish government is set to spend €15.3 billion in 2018 on healthcare.

The public and private sector are working together to complete 14 state-of-the-art health facilities across the Republic of Ireland, a partnership between Health Service Executive and Prime Contractors Balfour Beatty and InfraRed Capital Partners.

The total cost is estimated to be €140m. So far, seven new centres have been built in Boyle, Tuam, Ballinrobe, Limerick, Claremorris, Ballymote and Kilcock.
